BBC IPLAYER is currently offering a very black-and-white episode of Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? from 1958. On the panel challenged to identify objects from the V&A was Professor Thomas Bodkin, who had made a splash in the museum world. I found it astonishing that he wore a black jacket, black waistcoat and striped trousers, like Captain Mainwaring in Dad’s Army.
